Phonics is learning the sounds that letters make. It is the bridge between letters and reading — once children connect each letter to its sound, they can begin to blend sounds and read simple words.
Both help, but for early reading the sound matters most. Saying 'mmm' for m (rather than 'em') makes it much easier for children to blend sounds into words later.
Many children enjoy playful sound games from age 3, with more formal phonics around 4 to 5. Keep it short, fun and full of praise at any age.
