Letter A Phonics Worksheet — the /a/ sound

The letter A usually makes the short /a/ sound, the open mouth sound you hear at the start of Apple, Ant and Astronaut. When you teach phonics, the sound matters far more than the letter name, because that is what helps a child actually read. Open your mouth a little, drop your jaw and say a short "ah" sound. Stretch it out gently, "aaa-pple", so your child can hear how the word begins.

With this worksheet, children aged 2 to 7 trace the letter, say the /a/ sound aloud and match it to friendly pictures like an Arrow, an Axe and a cheerful Alligator. Saying the sound while pointing at each picture builds the link between what they see, what they hear and what they say. That link is the first real step towards blending sounds into words.

Keep it playful and short. A few minutes a day of saying "a, a, Apple" together does more than a long worksheet session. Praise every attempt, because confidence is what keeps a young reader coming back for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teach the sound first. Knowing that A says /a/ helps a child read words much sooner than the name "ay".

Not at all. Gently model the correct /a/ sound and let them copy you. Repetition over a few days is all it takes.

It suits children from about 2 to 7. Younger ones can simply say the sound, while older ones can trace and read along.
