Letter B Phonics Worksheet — the /b/ sound

The letter B makes the short, bouncy /b/ sound you hear at the start of Ball, Banana and Bus. It is made by gently pressing your lips together and then popping them open with a little puff of voice. Try it with your child in front of a mirror so they can watch your lips bounce apart, "b, b, Ball".

This worksheet invites children aged 2 to 7 to trace the letter B, say the /b/ sound and match it to cheerful pictures like a Bear, a Butterfly and a Book. Because /b/ is a quick popping sound, it cannot be stretched like "sss". Instead, repeat it crisply and clearly, "b-b-ball", so your child hears that snappy beginning.

Linking the /b/ sound to pictures helps a child notice how many things around them begin the same way. That awareness of beginning sounds is one of the strongest early reading skills. Keep sessions short and full of smiles, and celebrate every confident "b" your little one makes.
