Letter E Phonics Worksheet — the /e/ sound

The letter E often makes the short /e/ sound you hear at the start of Egg, Elephant and Engine. It is a gentle open sound, made by smiling a little and saying "eh", as in the beginning of Elbow. Have your child say it softly and notice how their mouth stays relaxed and slightly open.

This worksheet guides children aged 2 to 7 to trace the letter E, say its /e/ sound and match it to friendly pictures like an Envelope, an Exit sign and a big Elephant. Saying "e, e, Egg" while looking at each picture helps connect the sound, the symbol and the meaning all at once.

Short vowel sounds like /e/ can be tricky for little ears, so keep practice slow and clear. The more a child hears the same beginning sound across different words, the better they become at picking out sounds inside words, which is exactly what reading needs. Celebrate every try and keep the tone warm and encouraging.

Practise them apart, "e, e, Egg" and "i, i, Igloo", and use clear pictures so each sound has its own anchor.

No, this sheet focuses on the short /e/ sound for beginners. The long sound in words like "tree" comes a little later.
