Letter H Phonics Worksheet — the /h/ sound

The letter H makes the soft, breathy /h/ sound you hear at the start of Hat, House and Horse. It is the gentlest of sounds, made simply by breathing out, like the warm puff you make on a cold mirror, "h, h, Hat". There is no voice in it at all, so encourage your child to feel the warm air on their hand as they say it.

This worksheet invites children aged 2 to 7 to trace the letter H, say its /h/ sound and match it to friendly pictures like a Hand, a Hen and a jar of Honey. Holding a palm in front of the mouth to feel the breath turns a tricky sound into a fun little experiment.

Because /h/ is so quiet, some children skip it when they speak. Gently modelling "h, h, House" helps them notice and add the sound. Hearing /h/ at the start of so many everyday words trains the ear for beginning sounds, which is a key step towards reading. Keep it light and praise every breathy "h" they manage.
