Letter N Phonics Worksheet — the /n/ sound

The letter N makes the /n/ sound you hear at the start of Nest, Nose and Net. It is a humming sound made through the nose, with the tongue tip resting behind the top teeth, "nnnn". Like /m/, it can be held and even feels a little tickly on the nose, which children love to notice when they touch it gently while humming.

This worksheet helps children aged 2 to 7 trace the letter N, say its /n/ sound and match it to friendly pictures like a Nut, the Night sky and a kind Nurse. Touching the nose to feel the buzz of "nnnn" turns the sound into a fun little discovery.

Because /n/ and /m/ are both gentle humming sounds, it helps to practise them side by side so children hear the difference. Spotting /n/ at the start of Nest, Nose and Net trains the ear for beginning sounds, an essential reading skill. Keep it light and playful, and cheer every clear "n" your little one makes.
