Letter J Tracing Worksheet for Preschool Kids
The letter J is a fun letter that looks like a fishing hook or an umbrella handle. On this worksheet your child practises the uppercase J, which is a tall line that curves to the left at the bottom, and the lowercase j, which curves the same way but adds a little dot on top, just like its cousin the letter i. The dotted guides help your child draw the line down and swing it into a smooth hook.
As your child traces, say the sound “j” as in jug and jam. This is a soft, springy sound made at the front of the mouth, and pairing it with the shape helps the letter stick. The picture cues of a jug, jam and a jet give playful words to name, perhaps with a big jump when you say jump.
This worksheet is made for ages 2 to 7. Younger children enjoy the swinging curve of J, while older children write J words and practise the dot on lowercase j. Tracing J builds control of a straight line that turns into a curve, which is great practice for hand and wrist movement. Remind your child to start at the top, pull straight down, then curve to the left like the bottom of an umbrella, and to finish lowercase j with its dot.
