Start here. These first ten words are used again and again inside every larger number, so they are worth learning really well.

Number Names 11 to 20

The “teen” numbers are a little special because they do not follow the neat pattern — they must be learned by heart. Say them aloud often.

The Simple Pattern for 21 to 99

Here is the trick that unlocks every number from 21 to 99: take the tens word, then add the ones word with a hyphen. That is all there is to it.

For example: 21 is twenty + one = twenty-one. 47 is forty + seven = forty-seven. 88 is eighty + eight = eighty-eight. Numbers that end in zero just use the tens word on its own — 30 is thirty, 60 is sixty.

• 21 to 29: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three … twenty-nine
• 31 to 39: thirty-one, thirty-two … thirty-nine
• 41 to 49: forty-one, forty-two … forty-nine
• 51 to 59: fifty-one … fifty-nine
• 61 to 69: sixty-one … sixty-nine
• 71 to 79: seventy-one … seventy-nine
• 81 to 89: eighty-one … eighty-nine
• 91 to 99: ninety-one … ninety-nine

How to Teach Number Names to Kids

Children learn number names fastest when they hear them, say them and write them — not just look at a chart. Keep sessions short and playful, about ten minutes a day.

• Count real objects aloud — steps, spoons, buttons
