ABC Tracing Worksheet

Letter Y Tracing Worksheet for Preschool Kids

The letter Y looks like a tree with two branches reaching up, or like a cup balanced on a stick. On this worksheet your child practises the uppercase Y, which has two slanted lines that meet in the middle and then a straight line going down, and the lowercase y, which has a small v at the top with a tail that swings down below the line. The dotted guides help your child join the slanted lines and add the downward stroke.

As your child traces, say the sound “y” as in yak and yellow. This is a gentle, gliding sound made at the front of the mouth, and pairing it with the shape helps the letter stick. The picture cues of a yak, yarn and the colour yellow give friendly words to name, perhaps with a wobble for the yo-yo as it goes up and down.

This worksheet is made for ages 2 to 7. Younger children enjoy the branching shape of Y, while older children write Y words and practise the tail of lowercase y, which drops below the line. Tracing Y builds control of slanted strokes joined to a straight one and teaches children about letters with tails. Encourage your child to say “two little branches, then a line straight down” so the strokes of Y feel clear and friendly.
